She was born in 1973 in Kirikhan, Hatai, in the Kurdish part of. She graduated at the Faculty of International Studies, University of Instanbul.
After that she joined the Kurdish guerrilla and spent four years in the mountains. In 1999 she was a member of the first guerrilla group for peace.
There were eight of them: they came down from the mountains to speak about peace and to suggest a negotiated solution to the bloody war, but they got immediately arrested and sentenced. Yuksel spent five years in jail.
From then on she’s been actively involved in human rights protection and she’s been working for a solution to the conflict.
She’s also editor in chief for the newspaper Gundem.
