Asia: subjects and conflicts in the whirl of capitalistic development

Sandro Mezzadra - 37.8 kbSandro Mezzadra, Professor, University of Bologna (Italy)
"The concept of Asia in the todays epoque it is featured by a costant paragon of West. We have to keep in consideration that this long-time contested history of the concept of Asia compared to that of West. We are oriented by the fact that even if it will ever be a peculiarity of the conflicts that we are analysing, there are also some bridges with what it is happening in Europe, in America Latina. An other point I would like to underline it is related with the new geographies of the power that are merging and the autonomous geographies that are merging those of the social fights. We are very interested to what it is happening in Cina and India and to the projects that are developing in that part of the world. One of those project it is the project of a critical conference in Calcutta." Mezzadra continuos his speech presenting the guests of this debate."

"Between the metropolitan world and the posy colonial world, still exist differences. Certainly the people that havve had a lot a words about the economical globalization but also we should look how the politic it is globalizing. Considering it I would talk to you about what it happened in Calcutta in december. On the 80’s all the chimical and industrial units of production have closed. But later the globalization has arrived the globalization and all the main types of industry have arrived and exploited the lands from us telling us that we would have a "Silicon Valley" in Calcutta. We disagreed with this idea but the government told us that this was our chance and that was the time to decide and accept the "Capital" for the land. So the government was asking the land. This happened on December and the peasants, in that time, have tried to resist, many of them have benn killed for this reason : the peasants were not at all involved with the nomenklatura. On January 10th 10.000 peasants - understanding that the investors can have all the advantages selling their land - they have closed the streets to the port and the union trades called for a general strikes 4 times just in a year. There are some shapes of fights that are forbidden but, the events of January 10th have shown that all this was possible : the democratic accepted laws did not have sense anymore. The government - facing those demostrations - has sent 5.000 cops to the demostrations and in reason of this more than 30 peasents have been killed between december and january."

I am very happy to be here,I’ve learnt a lot and I am happy to share with my chinese experience. I come from a country that has been for long a revolutionary country and now has an high developed market economy. After the great transformation of 1989, the fall of "real socialism", China is still ruled by a party that call itself communist.
China has got a fast economic grow, every year the GDP has a 10% increase. On the other hand in China there are every day from 100 to 200 protest actions. We face a contraddictory situation. Both the Chinese and foregin analyists are stunned by that situation. That situation. I think that every analisys and strategy on social struggle should take account of this situation with great attention. What I would like to show that is going on between the chinese political activists in China in the last years. In the ’90, face to the social inequalities that has been a development of the critical thought. Debates in these years has been described as a struggle between the left and the neoliberals"

Brett Neilson - 35.8 kbBrett Nielson – Professor, University of Technology, Sydney – Australia
"There are relationships between Asia, China, Africa and USA and the others continents, but rethinking Asia means also rethinking Europe. To look to Asia to have another perspective, another governance system.
A new cycle of struggles has begun, the north american system has been defeated, we face anew multilateral system: the unilateral war driven by Australia in the Pacific island is an ongoing war that is not well known. All these struggles are reshaped in the global background.
From the XX century Australia has been very anxious toward Asia, from the partecipation in the Vietnam war, to the recongnition of China in 1972.
There has been the push by the desire of being part of the economic boom: the desire of being part of the capitalist development but has been refused by Asia.
