No NATO in Venice!

Friday November 12th, 2004 20:07 Venice - Grassroots sanctioning against a militarized city

From spritz in Santa Margherita square to the sabotage of the hotels that are hosting the delegates of the NATO assembly, Saint Precarious guides a demonstration of over 200 people against a militerized city.

22.20 - The activists have reached the hotel Danieli, just behind San Marco square, where they are met by about 50 police in riot gear. Protesters manage to put themselves in front of the doors before the police can stop them. After a few minutes of tension, the police move back a few meters, blocking the street and pulling out their billyclubs and night sticks. A small group of demonstrators then begin throwing eggs filled with red paint and red smoke bombs smbolizing the blood of innocent civilians killed under bombardments. After throwing the last few eggs and smoke bombs onto the balconies and one into the window, the protesters turn back towards San Marco square.

21.05 - The demonstration, behind a banner reading "Public Assembly Rights Now! Stop Global War!", arrives in front of Hotel Danieli.

20.55 - From the mobile sound system, Luca Casarini tells the people in San Marco square about the initiative against the hotel Europa Regina and about the school occupied by the students.

Ore 20.40 - The march reaches reaches the hotel Europa Regina and as one part of the group sblocks the street, another throws fireworks, paint-filled eggs and smoke bombs against the hotel. Demonstrators chant "No war delgates in our city!"

20.25 - The lively demonstration passes near the Accadamia bridge and in front of the ex-English consulate that, after being the target of many iniziatives and protests at the beging of the war in Iraq, has been moved to a much more romote location. A small victory for the Italian social movements.

Ore 20.20 - From the collective spritz in piazza, the demonstration of about 200 people begins to take a stroll about the city. The music from the portable sound system is on loud and speeches are being made from the microphone calling for the delgates to go home and enough with teh militarization of the city. More than 250,000 soldiers and police forces have been called to preside of the city for the week of the NATO convention.
The demonstration passes in front of the artistic school that was occupied last night in protest of the NATO convention. Some of the student occupants come out on the balconies to cheer and salute their social battle companions.

20.00 - From S.Margherita Place in Venice, a first corrispondence telling about the activities in Venice this weekend The appointment for tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Lido is announced.
