OPEN#4

Opening January 25, 6 p.m.DJ set since 8 p.m. with Belinda’s Friends

The questions we wondered about and asked to the artists come from a reflection about the present, from the worsening of the global crisis to the debate on creative industries, from precariousness to the consciousness of the growing weight that creativity is assuming inside the new ways of labour in general.
We inaugurate the fifth edition of the collective exhibition of S.a.L.E. Docks. The call of this year proposed the topic of the relationship between art and work.

How does contemporary relationship between art and work set up? What makes an artist become a proper worker? If commodification of art has been widely analysed, what happens if are artists themselves those who are commodified? Does a relation between the gain of rights for art workers and the chance to renew languages exist?

We selected fifteen works of art that faced this topic from different point of view.

Three works concern the factory work and the epochal shift from Fordism to Post-fordism. Angelo Castucci re-elaborate the personal memories of an emigrant family who belongs to the working class, Gianluca Marinelli proposes a brief documentary about the relationship between art and industrialisation in the city of Taranto. Leone Contini underlines the links between the fights for workers rights and the prefiguration of an alternative life based on the direct and horizontal management of material resources of a community.

In regards of alternative models of development (which enhances dislocated production) Studiomobile proposes a prototype of floating garden fed by desalinated water. Nico Angiuli reflects on farm work (on the concatenation man-machine), a very ancient topic approached with a science fiction prospective. The imaginary proposed by Roberto Amoroso is filled with crossbreeding, which pushes the man beyond the limits of human in the fight against financial crisis and its henchmen.

Other proposals investigate the specificities and the contradictions of artistic work: Rhaze presents an installation inspired by the studies of the art sociologist Pascal Gielen. Az.Namusn Art. brings a complete meal for artists produced thanks to culture jamming. Simone Rastelli calls into question the “cleaning lady” to ironically underline a distance (but also a possible connection) between the creative and the caring work, and this connection is enforced by the embroidery of Sabina Romanin, with a gender point of view about fragmentation of precarious time and the necessity to “sew” one’s subjectivity. Emiliano Pistacchi produced a newspaper for classified ads where twenty artists provide their workforce for every kind of job. Fabio Santacroce uses anti-monumentality to realize precarious compositions that involve desire and work, personal references and elements from the social imaginary. Jolanda Cesari amazes with her hint to workforce, while the provocative reference by Filippo Riniolo to the utilization of the term “work” by the Nazis imposes a reflection on the actual dynamics of the organization of cognitive labour. In conclusion, mash up and found footage are the techniques on which is based the video by Danilo Torre, who composes unedited combinations around the binomial work-revolution.
