April 2nd - European day of Action/First reports from UK

Monday April 4th, 2005

The mobilisation for this day of action did a lot for anti racist movements in the UK. Everybody I asked at the london demo agreed that this was the first time that such a diversity of groups came together to protest simultaneously for freedom of movement without compromises. For more elaborate texts on the general position check the noii.org.uk website, especially the link to the new broadsheet pdf. The different groups know each other and cooperate occasionally, but very often the individual campaigns and political angles remain separate - different approaches, different styles, different politics.

So even if only a few thousand people were out in the streets in the UK today, even if a lot of connections remain to be made, links have been strengthened and people worked together on one mobilisation. This is amazing - and badly needed considering the blatantly racist anti-immigration election campaigns of both tories and new labour. So thanks for the european inspiration.
