Covid-19 and climate crisis: revolution in the web of life
Road to Venice Climate Meeting

After months in which Climate Movements have taken and conquered the squares and streets of the whole world, in which the themes and issues linked to climate justice and the climate crisis have heavily placed themselves within Public Debate, on 4th and 5th April we should have all met up at the Venice Climate Meeting with the objective of opening up a wide scope of action for climate justice, by trying to create a functional mixture between elaborate radical elements of analytical theory and the practical elements we put to use in the last year. A physical space which cannot find its much needed and much required necessary substance, but of which we continue to feel its urgency and necessity. For this reason we feel it is necessary to maintain the prospect of the meeting, with a possible postponement in September 2020 during the next Venice Climate Camp. However, at this moment in time, we feel the need to pursue the elaboration in tune with period we are living in – that of the Covid-19 pandemic and that of the subsequent crisis related to the pandemic.

These days the mainstream narrative tries to show us how the lock-down has also positive effects in relation to the Climate Emergency. The temporary closure of some industrial activity, the interruption of mobility, and the reduction of emissions are read as promising signs. What the mainstream narrative does not understand is the uniqueness of the framework within which Climate Emergency and pandemic move – connected, and not separate, levels that are generating a systemic crisis of accumulation, production, consumption, and liquidity. Also in relation to the “Nature-Work-Capital” dialectic, the official version carries the risk of erasing the first element of such dialectic from the discussion, thus bringing us back in time.

Therefore we will use the virtual space, the only space available to us at the moment, in order to get to the bottom of the issues that Covid-19 has brought to the surface. Questions such as: in what way do the pandemic and its consequences, insert themselves within the framework of the demands for Climate Justice? How can it be possible to reinforce integral European developments, made up of shared conflict, in the face of crumbling European institutions? And, finally and most importantly, what will the future of Climate Movements within the emergency, and beyond the emergency, be like?

These are questions that must be answered together, in order to update the “rule book” of Climate Movements – if we read Covid-19 not as the cause of the crisis, but as one of its consequences, the case for “Just Transition” fits perfectly within the frame of the demands that have arise during the last month of lock-down. Among these demands are the right to accessible healthcare and the right to a guaranteed basic income.
We believe that these levels of discussion can be truly operational for when, finally, we can all meet again and continue to trace the lines of a radical change to the system.
